The food is a little like very upmarket pub food, so think half pints of prawns, fish pies, lobster thermidor (what do you mean you've never seen that down the King's Head? With blankets, and a rain cover keep your social plans in the diary! Good seafood is hard to come by – but when it’s done well, it’s probably the most delicious thing you can put in your mouth.

A quick lunch for locals usually involves a platter of shellfish and a glass of champagne, but hot dishes including fish soup, chilli crab and lobster linguine, and good old fish and chips are equally delicious.

An instant classic. At its best, seafood relies on unpredictability, freshness trumping all, so calling this shoal of restaurants across London “dependable” might come across the wrong way.

We enjoyed a full fruit de mer platter at the Spitalfields branch and have never felt happier.
