Well, it didn't take me very long to make up my own mind and I am very sad about this book. Let me just by saying that I ordinarily love Fannie Flagg's books. The Whole Town's Talking is about several generations spread out from 1889 to 2020 and all the decades in between. Fannie's most recent book take us back again to the familiar surroundings of Elmwood Springs, MO, and host of characters we previously have met in her works. She tells the story of a small town in Missouri from its founding to its demise. Ages, dates, things that happened to certain characters in the first three books are not in line with that happens to them in this book, and I personally find this type of writing shoddy to say the least. I have been a Fannie Flagg fan, but was very disappointed with this last novel. Flagg’s Elmwood Springs novels are comfort reads of … I don’t know. It includes a small mystery beginning in the last chapters, however the epilogue destroys any satisfaction therein with its ridiculous assertion that nothing on earth, or ever after, matter. We were living in a country where there was freedom of speech for some, but not all. I consider Fannie Flag one of my ultimate comfort read authors.
